Shopify’s acquisition of the Shop.com domain name has been reported at US$99 million. The sale itself is confirmed; the reported price comes from domain researcher George Kirikos’s interpretation of Shopify’s financial disclosures.
The sale is confirmed
Market America announced the completed sale to Shopify on 28 September 2026. Its corrected announcement, published on 5 October, names both parties but does not state a price.
Shopify’s 29 September changelog confirms that Shop’s web experience moved from Shop.app to Shop.com, with existing links redirecting automatically.
Where the $99m figure comes from
Shopify’s third-quarter earnings release, issued on 3 November 2026, shows US$99 million spent acquiring intangible assets during the quarter. The figure appears in the cash-flow statement on page 5.
In his 3 November report, Kirikos inferred that this spending represented the Shop.com purchase.
That accounting line does not name Shop.com or separately disclose its purchase price. We therefore describe US$99 million as the reported price, rather than a figure directly confirmed for this domain name in the buyer’s or seller’s announcements cited here.
What can other businesses learn from it?
In our view, the interesting part is the fit between the name and the business. Shopify already had a service called Shop. Shop.com gives that service a web address that directly matches its name.
For another business, the useful questions are more specific:
- Would a different domain name make the business easier to find, remember or recommend?
- Does the address fit what you are building and where you want to take it?
- What alternatives could work, and what purchase budget can you justify?
An exceptional headline price is not a budget benchmark for every buyer. Start with the business case, a shortlist of realistic options and a clear limit for the negotiation.
